Giving photography some love with a one-night show

Poor photography. It’s the middle child of the visual arts: not as revered as its older sibling painting, and continually embarrassed by its youngest brother, the homemade YouTube video. Not to mention, the work of a good shutterbug is often taken for granted when the subject gets more glory than the genius who shot it.

But this weekend, Create:Fixate puts photography on up on its shoulders and parades it around at the second annual “Backscatter” event, an entire show dedicated to the unsung loveliness of fine art photography. Celebrate the magic that happens when fate and film grain align, and check out work ranging from abstracted landscapes and gritty street scenes to time-suspended moments and frank portraiture. We’re also partial to the shot of the toothpaste diorama.

“Backscatter II” is a one-night event taking place Sat., July 12, 7 p.m.-2 a.m at Lot 613 in Downtown Los Angeles.
