Low Down

The thinking man’s bacchanals? Culture vultures are partying hardy at the recurring art scenester events across the city. Eastside intellectuals crowd the quarterly JMOCA shindigs at Justin Hansch’s three-bedroom Silver Lake home. The 29-year-old curator/host invites guest artists to exhibit their work all over the property, which means that, along with contempo canvases in the den, visitors find video installations in the bathroom and live goats- a comment on herd mentality, natch-out front. > > > Cocktail-fueled quarterly showcase Create:Fixate is thrown by founder Michelle Berc at a warehouse deep in the downtown Industrial District. Upward of 1,500 credit card-deploying aesthetes browse pieces by 30 artists, then shift gears to dancing to a dozen or so musical acts. > > > Mandrake, the Cheers of Culver City’s internationally renowned gallery row, is hosting its ongoing Deleuze From A to Z series, which screens short films inspired by taped interviews with the late postmodern French philosopher Gilles Deleuze on occasional Sundays. Afterwards, the erudite audience, buzzing on theory, proceeds to get sloshed: “We time the events,” says Mandrake co-owner Justin Beal, “to end around the time the bar is filling up.”
